FKF Women’s Premier League (FKF-WPL) side, Mombasa Olympic, can now breathe a sigh of relief after Citizen TV anchor Lulu Hassan stepped in with much-needed financial support.
The Mombasa-based team was on the verge brink of missing a crucial midweek away fixture on Wednesday, April 23, against Trinity Starlets in Naivasha due to lack of funds.
The long journey from the Coast had become a major logistical challenge for the cash-strapped side, particularly during the second half of the season.
In a show of generosity, Lulu Hassan covered the team’s travel, accommodation, and meals, and went a step further and pledged to support the club for the remainder of the season.
Former coach Joseph Oyoo lauded the timely intervention, describing it as a lifeline for the embattled squad.
“Mombasa Olympic received a huge financial boost from Lulu Hassan, who generously donated the full amount needed for the trip. She even pledged to support the team for the remainder of the season. We are incredibly grateful to Lulu and her initiative, ‘Jamii by Lulu Hassan’, for stepping in,” Oyoo shared.
Lulu and her husband, fellow Citizen TV anchor Rashid Abdalla, are known for their love for football. The duo co-run the Rashid Abdalla Super Cup, a grassroots tournament currently in its sixth edition, mainly held in Kwale County.
With just three games left in the season, Mombasa Olympic sit 10th on the league table with 13 points, six behind Kisumu All Starlets.
They must win all their remaining matches and hope All Starlets lose theirs to avoid relegation.
