Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced that all medical bills and extra costs for victims in the deadly fire that killed 8 in Kibra Sub-County will be catered for.

The blaze reportedly started at around 5am on Saturday, engulfing several homes in the densely populated neighbourhood.

Speaking during a church service in Kibra, Governor Sakaja noted that families of the victims will also be assisted in covering burial costs.

“We will waive all hospital bills and they will not be charged for anything at the mortuary. We will also cater for the burial plans and the coffins even as we help them rebuild,” he said.

He, however, called for the streamlining of the connection of illegal power connections in informal settlements to tame frequent fire breakouts.

“Otherwise we will have a fire everyday. And those living there will never notice. There are models that have been used globally on social connections to power. That is the solution we ask for,” Sakaja added.

Bodies of the deceased were moved to the City Mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.
