A family in Kagumo, Kirinyaga Central Sub-county, Kirinyaga County is mourning the tragic death of 28-year-old Brian Maina, who was killed during protests in Nairobi on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
According to family members led by his grandfather, Joseph Waweru Kinyua, Brian was allegedly clobbered by a police officer during the demonstrations. He was rushed to hospital by his friends around 3 p.m. but sadly succumbed to his injuries at approximately 8 p.m. while receiving treatment.
Mr. Waweru, who had been living with his grandson in Umoja One, Nairobi, said Brian had been helping him manage his properties after completing his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
“He was not just my grandson—he was my personal assistant and took care of my properties. He was married and had two children. Why did the police officer have to hit him?” he lamented during an interview at their home in Kagumo.
Brian’s mother, Peninah Wairimu, said she received the heartbreaking news while she was caught up in demonstrations in Kutus Town.
“I couldn’t believe it when my brother called to inform me that my son was no more,” she said tearfully. “He was my firstborn. Now I am left with only two children. I want justice for my son.”
The family plans to bury Brian on Friday.
Brian was among thousands of youths across the country who joined demonstrations marking the anniversary of last year’s protests, during which more than 60 lives were lost in various towns and cities.
His aunts and uncles, led by Nancy Wanjiku and Richard Waithaka, said Brian had every right to join the peaceful protests and called on the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to ensure the officer responsible for his death is held accountable.
“This was a peaceful protest. Brian did not deserve to die,” they said, urging swift action and justice for their loved one.
