Three people died on Wednesday following a tragic collision with a matatu at Research area along the Mwea-Embu highway in Kirinyaga County.
The deceased, including a motorcycle rider and his two female pillion passengers died on the spot in the 10am accident.Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcycle, which was heading toward Makutano, veered off its lane and encroached onto the opposite side of the road. It collided head-on with a matatu that was travelling from Makutano towards Ngurubani.
“The impact was severe. All three—the rider and the two women passengers—died on the spot,” police said.
Michael Njue, the matatu driver, said he was driving from Nairobi towards Meru when the speeding motorcycle suddenly appeared in his lane.
“I was driving at about 60 to 70 km/h when the motorcycle with two passengers hit me head-on,” he said.
The collision caused the motorcycle to become lodged beneath the front side of the matatu.
“It is unfortunate that a man and two women have lost their lives in this morning’s accident,” said local resident Peter Wanjohi.
Confirming the incident, Wang’uru Police Base Commander Jamilah Murugu said the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kerugoya Mortuary for identification, while both the matatu and motorcycle were towed to Sagana Police Station for further inspection.
