The quiet village of Manera in North Kanyamwa Location, Ndhiwa Sub County, has been plunged into mourning following a horrific incident involving a 25-year-old farmhand who allegedly defiled and murdered his employer’s 16-year-old daughter before taking his own life.
The gruesome discovery was made on Sunday evening when the victim’s mother returned home from a trip to Kisumu.
According to Ndhiwa Sub County Police Commander John Losia, the woman had left her daughter and the farmhand, identified as Brian Manase, at home earlier that day.
Upon her return, the mother noticed Manase was missing and went to check on her daughter, only to make a harrowing discovery.
The body of the teenager, Ida Odhiambo—a Grade Eight pupil at Manera Primary School—was found concealed under a bed in one of the family’s houses, with visible signs of violence and blood at the scene.
A frantic search for the suspect ensued, leading neighbors to another grim finding: Manase’s lifeless body hanging from the roof inside his sleeping quarters.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the farmhand sexually assaulted the girl before killing her with a panga.
Authorities have since moved both bodies to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations as investigations continue.
The shocking incident has left the community in disbelief, with local leaders and residents calling for increased vigilance and security measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
