With Ryan Mason in charge, it seems the Baggies are going big on a rebuild project, but who are West Brom’s most expensive signings of all time?

After parting ways with Tony Mowbray at the end of last season, West Brom took their time to find their next manager before landing on former Spurs coach Ryan Mason.

It’s an exciting appointment, with the young manager bringing a fresh approach to the club. His latest signing, Aune Heggebo, is a big deal.

We’re not just talking about his ability, either. The Norwegian striker cost a pretty penny at £4.7m, but he doesn’t even come close to breaking the top five when it comes to West Brom’s most expensive signings of all time

West Brom’s most expensive signings ever

5. Jay Rodriguez – £11.84m

He may be strutting his stuff for Wrexham now, but Jay Rodriguez has had a long and very successful career at a number of clubs, including West Brom.

The striker joined the Baggies from Southampton in the summer of 2017 in an £11.84m move, and went on to score 33 goals in 90 games for the club. He was unable to save them from relegation in the season he signed though, and left for Burnley the summer before West Brom won promotion again. Maybe he was a bad luck charm?

4. Oliver Burke – £13.13m

The same summer Rodriguez arrived, West Brom also splashed out £13.13m on Oliver Burke, with the attacker joining from German outfit RB Leipzig.

The Scotsman barely featured for West Brom over the course of a two-year stay, though, registering just one goal and three assists in 24 appearances.

Loan spells at Celtic and Alaves followed, before a permanent move to Sheffield United. West Brom took a loss on the deal, too, selling Burke for just £5.6m.

3. Nacer Chadli – £13.13m

Nacer Chadli joined West Brom from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2016, and helped the Baggies achieve a tenth place finish in the Premier League in his first season.

He registered five goals and five assists in 2016/17, but was limited to just five appearances the following year as West Brom suffered relegation.

To be fair, the Baggies didn’t do too badly when they moved Chadli on, selling him to Monaco for £10.3m in 2018.

2. Karlan Grant – £14.26m

West Brom took a punt on Karlan Grant in 2020, and while they were unable to stave off relegation in his first season, he’s remained with the club ever since. There’s a chance he becomes one of West Brom’s outgoings this summer, but he’s been a tremendous servant for the club.

After 145 appearances and 31 goals, Grant has proven to be a decent contributor and feels like a worthy member of the list of West Brom’s most expensive signings to date.

2 Karlan Grant £14.26m Huddersfield October 2020

1. Salomon Rondon – £14.69m

Topping the list of West Brom’s most expensive signings, Salomon Rondon is a name most neutrals are well aware of after he achieved an odd kind of cult status in the Premier League.

He made 120 appearances for the Baggies after joining from Zenit St. Petersburg in 2015 for a reported fee of £14.69m. Interestingly, despite his struggles at times, West Brom managed to turn a profit on Rondon, selling him to Chinese outfit Dalian Professional for £15.76m in 2019.
