Miraa farmers in Kenya will now export their produce to Djibouti after the two countries reached a trade agreement.

The export of miraa will be subject to regulatory compliance.

The development comes after Kenya and Djibouti undertook a series of trade engagements between October and November 2024 that started with a Kenyan trade mission to Djibouti in October that was followed by a reciprocated mission by a Djibouti delegation in November.

Interested exporters have been urged to comply with Djibouti’s export regulations that include obtaining necessary permits and adhering to product standards as well as adhering to Kenyan governmental and institutional regulations to ensure smooth trade operations.

The Agriculture Food Authority through its Director General, Dr. Bruno Linyira issued a statement praising the development as an essential milestone in diversifying Kenya’s miraa export market. He further urged exporters to take advantage of the new commercial opportunity to link up with buyers in Djibouti for business engagements.

Kenya resumed miraa exports to Somalia in 2022 after the suspension of a 2 year ban put in place in 2020 because of a diplomatic fallout between the two countries during former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s regime.
