The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) has named 107 bars and clubs across the country that could face closure for noise pollution.

In a notice issued yesterday, the authority explained that it has been flooded with complaints from the public about loud music coming from clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants. The crackdown, it said, aims to curb rising noise pollution from entertainment joints.

Nema explained that most of the affected facilities had already been served with Environmental Restoration Orders, which required them to provide environmental compliance documents. However, the majority failed to comply

“Nema has been receiving noise pollution complaints regarding clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants across the country. Several facilities have been issued Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents, but the majority have failed to comply,” the notice read.

“This move follows persistent concerns over excessive noise disrupting communities, especially in urban areas such as Nairobi and Mombasa, where noise-related complaints have risen by 15% over the past year.”

Among the targeted facilities are popular entertainment spots such as 1824, Paris Lounge, Lang’ata, Cool Breeze Bar in Ruiru, Havana Lounge along Northern Bypass, Al Fhakeer, Kettle House, and Quiver Lounge in Eastlands.

Others are; Quiver Lounge, Kilimani, Airport Club, Bar Next Door, O.J Club Ruiru, Ibury Lounge and Club Ibiza.

Restaurants and eateries, too, have recieved a warning. They include: Alaska Lounge and Grill, Funcity Hotel, Mchana restaurant, Kijito Gardens and Mamba Village.

The authority has now ordered the listed establishments to submit the required documents within seven days.

The documents include: Certificate of incorporation and list of directors, Environmental Impact Assessment license, current Environmental Audit report, proof of noise control measures and written explanation on why they should not face legal action or closure.

Nema warned that any business that fails to comply risks prosecution, closure, and other legal consequences.

The crackdown comes as Kenya prepares for World Cleanup Day 2025, with NEMA also rolling out campaigns against textile waste and other environmental hazards.

Operators have been directed to submit documentation to NEMA’s headquarters in Nairobi within the stipulated timeframe.

Failure to do so, the notice warned, will lead to enforcement measures, including closure of premises.
