Detectives in Nyali Sub-county have arrested a man accused of defrauding travellers seeking accommodation through online platforms in Mombasa.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect allegedly conned a Nairobi resident who had been planning a family vacation.

The victim reportedly discovered an apartment advertised online as “Brima Mangu Apartment 2B” on December 1, 2025, and made inquiries. The suspect, identifying himself as Brian Masika, claimed to be the property owner.

After negotiations, the two allegedly agreed on a rate of Sh6,000 per night, prompting the victim to send Sh24,000 for four nights to a mobile money till number provided by the suspect.

However, when the family arrived in Mombasa three days later, the suspect had cut off all communication, leaving them stranded.

The matter was reported to authorities, prompting detectives to launch a manhunt. Guided by forensic leads, officers traced the suspect to his hideout, where he was arrested.

The DCI confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court.

As the festive season approaches, the agency is urging the public to remain vigilant when making online accommodation bookings.

“Not every enticing offer is legitimate. Stay cautious to avoid falling victim to scams,” the DCI warned.
