Award-winning journalist Rashid Idi dies after a short illness

Award-winning journalist and senior videographer at Standard Media Group Rashid Idi has passed away after a short illness.

According to a report from the family, the late Rashid passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2025, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

Family and colleagues gathered at the Masjid Mosque in Kibera on Thursday, December 26, 2025, to pay their last respects. The body will be moved to Malakisi, Bungoma County, for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Work life

Idi joined the Standard Group Editorial Department on January 17, 2013, and worked for over a decade, contributing significantly to visual storytelling and editorial excellence across the company’s platforms. He was widely respected for his professionalism, dedication, and creativity.

On the other hand, his notable achievements during his career include the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award in 2016 alongside journalist Asha Mwilu, a recognition of his outstanding work in the field of journalism.

At the time Rashid and Asha Mwilu shared the overall ‘CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year’ Award for their combined work ‘Terror Crossing,’ which was chosen from a record number of 1,637 entries spanning 38 countries across the African continent.

Worth noting, Mwilu and Idi’s ‘Terror Crossing’ is an in-depth investigative documentary about security at the Kenya-Somali border in Mandera County. The story was aired by Kenya Television Network (KTN) in its investigative program “The Lead.”

Rashid has served as a journalist for more than twenty years.

Journalist death

As the media fraternity mourns, Rashid’s death comes just a few weeks after the KCB Mayienga FM station manager died in Nairobi.

The veteran radio presenter Festus Amimo’s death was confirmed in a statement on Sunday, December 7, by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

The seasoned broadcaster hosted the popular Mayienga FM morning show (Gari Mokinyi).

At the time of his untimely death, Mayienga FM described the loss as shocking, remembering him as a dedicated professional whose passion for radio was unmatched.

“It is with profound shock, deep sorrow, and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our head of station, Festus Amimo,” Mayienga FM posted.

Friends and family and colleagues joined in the tributes, mourning the veteran journalist.
