Workers at Kisii’s Affordable Houses down tools over unpaid dues

Operations at Ogembo Affordable Houses in Kisii County were halted on Monday following a demonstration by workers at the construction site.

The workers downed tools over what they claimed to be a month-long unpaid dues, which they have been receiving weekly as stipends.

Over 200 agitated workers paralysed transport along Ogembo-Ikoba roads, chanting anti-government slogans over incessant promises from officers in charge whenever they ask for arrears.

They swore never to return to the construction site, which is at 44%, saying they are unable to cope and landlords have closed their houses.

Anti-riot police were called in to quell the situation from morphing into the destruction of government property.

An officer in charge of the Ogembo Affordable Houses site, on condition of anonymity, said they are unable to operate normally until money hits the workers’ accounts.

Similar concerns are also reported to have hit Masimba Affordable Houses under construction, as workers also claim unpaid wages.
