Police in Nairobi are investigating the death of a 22-year-old woman who reportedly fell from the sixth floor of an apartment at a short-stay accommodation facility in Kileleshwa.

The woman, identified as Consolata Githinji, is said to have fallen from apartment C601. Police have arrested a 33-year-old man believed to have been in her company as investigations continue.

CCTV footage obtained by Citizen TV shows the woman’s final movements at the apartment block.

According to the footage, a night guard was seen near the lift lobby at about 4:11am. At 4:17am, Consolata arrived with a man later identified as Tonny Odhiambo. She appears to reach for the guard, who then walked away.

At 4:18am, the guard assisted the pair to unlock a key box and they entered apartment C601.

Footage reviewed by Citizen TV shows shadows at the doorway at 4:32am, suggesting commotion. At 4:34am, the guard entered the apartment, before stepping out at 4:43am. He lingered for about two minutes and left, then returned briefly at 4:46am — the last time Consolata is seen alive.

It remains unclear what happened next and how she ended up on the ground floor.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrived at the scene at about 6:09am and took crime scene photographs as investigations began.

In an interview with Citizen TV, the suspect claimed the woman had been standing at a bedroom window and that he was unable to prevent her from falling. He also claimed she had expressed suicidal thoughts.

Citizen TV established that the apartment was not booked under the suspect’s name, but under one of his friends.

Records seen by Citizen TV show that between 5:56pm and 3:57am, three individuals — two women and a man — checked into the same room. Police are expected to establish who they were and whether they played any role in events leading up to the incident.

Residents and estate security officials called for regulations to guide operations at short-stay facilities, saying the estate has previously recorded incidents linked to such accommodation.

The victim’s family is seeking clarity on whether the death was suicide or if there is more to the case, as police continue investigations.
