Over 2,000 uncollected IDs in Juja threaten to lock out youth voters from upcoming elections

More than 2,000 national identity cards remain uncollected at registration offices in Juja, Kiambu County, raising concerns that many eligible citizens could miss out on participating in the upcoming general elections.

The majority of the unclaimed IDs are believed to belong to young people who have yet to complete voter registration, even as the electoral commission closed the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) on Wednesday.

The situation has prompted leaders from Jubilee Party in Kiambu County to call on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to extend the recently concluded mass voter registration exercise.

They argue that additional time would allow ID holders to collect their documents and register as voters.

County party officials, including chairman George Maara and Juja parliamentary aspirant Joseph Gichui, expressed concerns over delays in processing identity cards, particularly affecting youth in the Mt Kenya region.

They emphasised that every Kenyan has the constitutional right to vote, regardless of political affiliation and should be given a fair opportunity to participate in the electoral process.

Residents who were unable to register during the mass exercise have since been encouraged to visit IEBC sub-county offices to complete their registration.

Registration centres across the country were packed on Tuesday as new voters queued to register, as well as those who sought to review their registration details.

The turnout mirrored a nationwide surge recorded in recent days, with the commission revealing that it had registered 1,876,274 new voters since the exercise began on March 30.

In its latest update, IEBC said it had achieved 75 per cent of its 2.5 million target, with 505,344 new voters registered between April 17 and April 23 alone, highlighting a sharp increase in last-minute registrations.

Alongside the new registrations, 159,410 voters applied for transfers, while 2,817 updated their registration details, signalling active movement within the voter database ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Eligible Kenyans however, will still be able to register after the deadline through continuous registration at all Huduma Centres, constituency IEBC offices and at the commission headquarters at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.
