The Kenya High Commission in Pretoria has urged Kenyan nationals living in South Africa to remain vigilant and avoid protest hotspots following demonstrations and isolated incidents affecting foreign nationals.

In an advisory dated May 4, 2026, the mission said Kenyans should, as far as possible, stay away from areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place and follow guidance issued by local authorities.

The High Commission also advised Kenyans to carry valid identification and relevant documentation at all times.

“In the event of any incident or emergency, Kenyan nationals are advised to report the same to the South African Police Service and to inform the Kenya High Commission in Pretoria for appropriate assistance,” the notice reads.

The advisory comes amid renewed anti-migrant tensions in South Africa, which has faced repeated spurts of xenophobic protests and occasional violence as the country grapples with unemployment of over 30 per cent.

Videos circulating online in recent days have shown migrants from some African countries being harassed.

South Africa’s acting police minister Firoz Cachalia condemned the incidents on Friday, saying attacks on foreign nationals were unlawful and violated constitutional values of dignity and equality.

“Acts of xenophobia, violence, looting, or intimidation will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Cachalia said, adding that police had been instructed to act decisively.

Reports from Ghana also cited concerns over escalating tensions, with Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa raising alarm over harassment of a Ghanaian resident in KwaZulu-Natal and advising nationals to take precautions.

South Africa hosts more than three million foreign nationals, according to its statistics agency.

The Kenya mission said it remains available to provide support and can be reached through its contact channels in Pretoria.
