Coventry manager, Frank Lampard has identified Jose Mourinho as the primary influence on his coaching career, citing the legendary manager’s psychological approach as a defining factor in his own development.

In an interview with The Times, Lampard reflected on the lessons learned during his record-breaking tenure at Chelsea, where he made 215 appearances under the Portuguese tactician. While acknowledging Mourinho’s tactical expertise, Lampard emphasized that the leadership and mental fortitude instilled by “The Special One” left the most lasting impression.

He recalled how Mourinho’s immense self-confidence served as a catalyst for his own growth on the pitch. “The biggest impact I remember of Jose was how much self-confidence he gave me, via his own self-confidence. I remember that transmitting,” Lampard shared.

Lampard noted that he was naturally more humble as a player, but Mourinho pushed him to demand more of himself and embrace a ruthless winning mentality.

Despite this deep admiration, the Coventry boss was clear that he isn’t trying to replicate Mourinho’s persona or that of other mentors like Carlo Ancelotti. Instead, he is focused on taking the core principles of drive and resilience and applying them in a way that remains authentic to his own character.
