In an effort to maintain its lead in the competition to control the rapidly developing technology, ChatGPT creator OpenAI announced on Monday that it will launch a new AI model named GPT-4o. This model can interact with text and images and can have realistic voice conversations.
The OpenAI researchers demonstrated during a livestream event that new audio capabilities allow users to speak to ChatGPT and receive real-time responses without any delay. These are two characteristics of realistic conversations that AI voice assistants have found difficult to achieve.

“It feels like AI from the movies … Talking to a computer has never felt really natural for me; now it does,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote in a blog post.
