Abel Mutua has broken down in tears during a podcast interview, recounting the last night he shared with his younger brother Raphael Mbuvi Musyoka, widely known as Rapho, before his death on 28 December 2023.
The clip, which has been circulating widely on Instagram, captures the celebrated Kenyan comedian and content creator in a raw, unguarded moment as he walked viewers through what happened in those final hours.
Abel Mutua recalls his brother’s last night
According to Abel, Rapho called him late that evening, and they spoke briefly. He described how the call came in at around 2am but he chose not to answer, later feeling deeply troubled by that decision.
He recounted how their bedrooms were close to their parents’ room, meaning that when Rapho’s phone went off, their father could hear it. Abel described their father as being extremely proud of Rapho, a young man he believed was building something meaningful with his life.
That night, Rapho reportedly set an early morning alarm, thought to have been set for around 5 am, before settling in for the night. The following morning, when the alarm went off and no one heard movement from his room, their mother became concerned.
It was their elderly father, then aged around 70 and now between 73 and 74, who went to check on Rapho. He knocked on the bedroom door but received no response. After knocking several more times, he entered the room and found his son unresponsive.
Rapho was 23 at the time of His death
Raphael was just 23 years old when he passed away. Following the announcement of his death, Abel shared a post on Instagram that included an M-Pesa till number, asking the public to contribute towards the burial costs.
The move sparked a heated debate online, with some Kenyans questioning why a well-known content creator would turn to the public for financial support, while others defended the family’s decision to seek help for a dignified send-off.
