Mohamed was sworn in at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 20, days after National Treasury CS John Mbadi appointed him to the post.
His appointment was gazetted in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated May 18, with the notice stating it was made under Section 11(1) of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act and would take effect from May 18, 2026.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 11 (1) of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury appoints Adan Abdulla Mohamed to be the Commissioner General of Kenya Revenue Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 18th May, 2026,” the notice reads.
Mohamed replaces Humphrey Wattanga, who exited in April 2026 after President William Ruto appointed him Kenya’s High Commissioner to Australia.
Mohamed steps into the role as the government seeks to raise more revenue amid tight fiscal conditions and growing economic demands.
The new KRA boss brings experience in banking, economic policy and public administration, having previously served as CEO of Barclays Kenya and Managing Director for Barclays East and West Africa, as well as Chief Administrative Officer for Barclays Africa overseeing operations across ten countries.
In government, he previously served as Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation and Trade, and later led the East African Community and regional development docket.
