Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has been unanimously elected as the new chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG). Abdullahi, who previously served as the CoG vice chair, will now succeed Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, whose term has ended.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga was elected as the new vice chair. Kahiga, known for his effective leadership in Nyeri County, will now work alongside Abdullahi in guiding the council.
The election followed over five hours of discussions, where the 47 county governors met behind closed doors to deliberate on key issues affecting devolution, including the rotation of leadership between the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions. This rotational leadership model has been crucial in ensuring balanced representation from both political sides.
The Council of Governors is instrumental in advocating for county interests at the national level, and the newly elected leaders are expected to bring renewed focus and energy to advancing the council’s agenda.
