Alarming numbers expose Man United’s collapse under Carrick

Following a frustrating 1-1 draw against ten-man Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Manchester United have slumped to their worst league start in 40 years.

Bryan Mbeumo’s clinical second-half finish looked to have set United on course for a much-needed victory, especially after Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for an altercation with Luke Shaw.

However, Dominic Solanke grabbed a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a point for the visitors and deny United maximum points.

With just six points from their opening six fixtures under Michael Carrick, the Red Devils have matched a historic club low not seen since the 1986–87 campaign. The result also means United have failed to win a Premier League match since August.

Beyond the surface-level results, underlying statistic reveal a dismal game-management failures, persistent late concessions, and an attack struggling to capitalize in crucial moments, condemning the club to its poorest return in four decades.

Damning stats laying bare United’s struggles

United’s recent results highlight deep inefficiencies against struggling opposition and an inability to capitalise on numerical advantages:

  • Struggles against bottom sides: United have failed to win back-to-back Premier League matches against teams starting the day bottom of the table (a 1-1 draw at Fulham on Matchday 5 followed by Saturday’s draw against bottom-placed Spurs).
  • They are the first top-flight team to suffer this fate since West Brom in December 2017.
  • Failure to capitalise on red cards: The Spurs draw extended United’s alarming run against ten-man opponents, failing to win any of their last three Premier League matches where the opposing team received a red card.

Despite the growing pressure, manager Michael Carrick urged positivity ahead of a demanding fixture list.

“The second half was much better, but there are certain things we must improve on,” Carrick said post-match. “We need to stay positive and get better. Games are coming thick and fast, and we must embrace them. It is a big challenge, but we are more than capable of winning games.”

Man Utd’ struggles

Manchester United’s 2026/27 campaign entered the record books for all the wrong reasons following their worst start to a season in 40 years. With just one victory across their opening six matches under Carrick, persistent defensive lapses and late-game collapses have left the squad languishing near the bottom half of the table.

The slump began on opening day with a stunning 2-0 defeat away to Hull City.

Although a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick inspired a temporary resurgence in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, momentum quickly evaporated. Late concessions forced a 2-2 draw at Everton, followed by a 1-0 derby defeat home to Manchester City and a 1-1 draw at Fulham—leaving United with just six points from six matches and cementing a four-decade record low.
