Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has ignited discussions online with her thoughts on parenting, particularly regarding the potential pitfalls of raising children in comfortable, wealthy environments.
In a recent interview on Babs TV with content creator Femi Babs on August 30, she cautioned that shielding children from hardships might lead to negative outcomes.
The dangers of excessive comfort
Ozokwor contended that well-meaning affluent parents may inadvertently set their children up for failure by preventing them from encountering difficulties.
She stated, “The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to suffer the way you did. I’m not saying allow them to suffer. What I’m saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process.”
She elaborated on her views, pointing out that children raised in wealth often lack an understanding of the effort that went into creating their family’s fortune.
According to Ozokwor, without this perspective, they may grow to mismanage or undervalue their inheritance.
“When they don’t struggle, can you imagine you have, like, 20 houses? Your children will just be struggling, ‘Which one belongs to me?’ They don’t know how you struggled to get those things,” she explained.
The actress made a clear distinction between the responsibilities of parenting and the detrimental effects of deliberate suffering, advocating for measured exposure to challenges as a means to foster resilience.
