A US-based man’s romantic gesture turned into a public spectacle in Liberia after he discovered his fiancée had allegedly been communicating with four other men on the very eve of their engagement party.
The man had organised the surprise gathering, inviting Zoey’s family and friends to celebrate what was meant to be a joyful milestone. However, when he stumbled upon her phone messages the night before the event, everything unravelled.
Standing before a room full of Zoey’s relatives, the man calmly took the microphone and began laying out what he had found.
“I found out yesterday that Zoey is talking to four different men; two of them send disappearing messages. One is her workmate, and they call each other babe, and he asked her to use protection whenever she wants to sleep with any man apart from him. She is also talking to another man who is married and has a child; she is messing with a married man,” he said.
He told the gathering that he had nearly walked away from the relationship in August but ultimately decided to give their love another chance, making the long journey from the United States to Africa with hopes of a future together.
Drama at engagement ceremony
The mood in the room shifted sharply the moment he began speaking. Voices rose from the crowd as guests, many of them Zoey’s relatives, began shouting “no, no” in an attempt to drown him out.
“You all think Zoey is a perfect girl; Zoey does not respect me,” he pressed on, even as a man moved towards the stage to grab the microphone from his hands.
The confrontation quickly descended into disorder, with men and women in the crowd reacting loudly and the atmosphere growing increasingly tense. The man was eventually escorted away from the scene by those present, reportedly for his own safety as emotions ran high on all sides.
The engagement party, which was meant to mark the beginning of a new chapter, ended without a proposal.
