The Anglican Church has raised the alarm over what it describes as the deteriorating state of the country under President William Ruto’s administration.
Citing a struggling economy as one of the key indicators that things are going wrong, the church is calling on Kenyans to stand up and demand action from the government before the situation gets worse.
Speaking during this year’s Anglican Church Standing Committee of the Provincial Synod, Anglican Church Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit delivered a strong message, decrying what he describes as the decline of key sectors of the economy and public services.
“Silence in the face of suffering is not neutrality; it is complicity, yet planting trees while uprooting justice is hypocrisy,” he said.
“It’s time we accept our country is getting worse. Millions of Kenyans continue to suffer under the weight of unemployment, rising costs, failing businesses and increasing tax burden,” said Ole Sapit.
The church also questioned why Kenyans continue to face a heavy tax burden, and yet there is little to show for it.
“Kenyans wonder why they are paying taxes that impoverish citizens, but there is little to see with public resources squandered,” he added.
Health was also singled out as one of the sectors facing serious challenges, with the church raising concerns over poor services, negligence and lack of transparency.
“Persistent challenges within the health sector have exposed systemic weaknesses and inflicted great suffering upon citizens. SHA isn’t working; the health sector is in shambles,” stated Ole Sapit.
The church is also raising questions over the confusion in the education sector.
“There is a Bill in Parliament that wants to take over religious-managed schools. We condemn that move and call on MPs to put the Bill aside,” he said.
As such, the church is now calling on Kenyans to wake up and hold the government accountable, warning that failure to act could lead to even tougher times ahead.
“Let’s hold the government accountable; this is evil and unacceptable,” Ole Sapit noted.
