Exciting action is on the horizon at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi this weekend, as Kenya’s top athletes vie for coveted spots at the Paris Olympics. Competition Director Kennedy Tanui assures that everything is set for the national trials, with numerous global stars confirmed to participate.

Tanui likens the two-day event to a “mini-Olympics,” promising spectators non-stop excitement across various track and field disciplines.

“Clear your diary for the two days of the Mini-Olympics,” urges Tanui, encouraging Kenyans to attend and witness the athletics extravaganza, which may provide a glimpse of what to expect at the Paris Olympics in many of the races.

Over 250 high-profile athletes will compete, including Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon, world champion Mary Moraa, and 10,000m world record holder Beatrice Chebet.

“The selection of Team Kenya is a process. We’ve already selected the marathon team, and today, Athletics Kenya will name the 10,000m teams that participated in trials at the Prefontaine Classic,” he added

Tanui explained that according to the Athletics Kenya (AK) constitution, the top two athletes in each event will be selected automatically, with the remaining athletes chosen by a panel of selectors.

“In the event that an athlete finishes in the top two but has not qualified by entry standard, they will be put on standby until the qualifying window closes on June 30, 2024,”

“However, all athletes must meet the stringent conditions outlined by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Athletics for qualification,” Tanui stated.
Tanui urged fans to come and support the athletes, highlighting that the fiercely contested event at Nyayo Stadium will be free to attend, providing a chance to watch the crème de la crème of athletics.

Athletics at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is scheduled to be held from August 1 to August 11.
