Actress and content creator Jackie ‘Awinjah’ Vike has weighed in on the debate on the rise of single mothers in Kenya. The mother of one says it’s a worrying trend and this is why she finds men who are actively involved in the upbringing of their children a turn-on.

“It’s an issue of concern but first things first, I don’t think there is any woman who would wish to be a single mother. No woman gets pregnant with the intention of raising the child alone. I believe every single mother has a reason why she found herself in that space at that time and that’s why I find present fathers a turn-on,” Vike revealed.

Nonetheless, the witty comedian says she doesn’t see anything wrong with being a single mother.

“You have to be thoughtful of yourself first whenever you’re raising a child. If you are in a good space mentally, health wise or physically then it’s going to be easy. It doesn’t matter if you are a single mother or not, you can do it. It’s not easy but you can. Sometimes we don’t realise that these children keep us going, they give us a purpose. Maybe without them we would have ended up in far worse situations,” she adds.

According to a 2022 Kenyan National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) survey, the number of registered births by single mothers in the country increased, from 13.5 per cent in the previous year to 13.9 per cent in 2022.

The report, which gives details of birth registration by marital status of the mother, showed an increase in the number of single mothers, compared to the married ones from 2018 to 2022.
