Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, visited those who sustained injuries during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations conducted on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
In a statement shared on his X account, the legislator who had actively participated in the protests also wished the injured persons a quick recovery.
“Today at Kenyatta National Hospital, I visited the Patriots who sustained serious injuries during Maandamano. Quick recovery to all those who were injured,” Babu Owino stated.
Babu Owino also described his experience breaching the parliament building to join fellow demonstrators.
“I jumped over Parliament’s gate to join my fellow Kenyans in the streets as they mourned the death of one of our own who was shot dead by the rogue police. My condolences to all the families who have needlessly lost their loved ones today due to the merciless killings by the Government. Their deaths will not be in vain, We will fight on until we win,” he declared.
He further condemned the violence meted on citizens fighting for their rights noting the need to stand against oppression and protect constitutional rights.
“Today I joined fellow Kenyans on the streets to fight for their rights as enshrined in the Constitution. Say NO to oppression. After the security refused to open the parliamentary gates, I jumped over to be with my People in the Streets,” Babu wrote in another post on his X account.
Chaos and live bullets on protesters
Chaos erupted as protesters breached parliament and caused massive destruction and vandalism within Parliament buildings.
Several protesters were shot in the fierce clash by the anti-riot police. Inside Parliament, chairs in the lounge area were turned upside-down, windows shattered, and walls destroyed.
More demonstrations were witnessed across the country including Nakuru, Mombasa, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega, and Meru, among other regions.
The situation remains tense as police resort to violence on the anti-tax protesters.
The demonstrators are demanding a complete rejection of the Finance Bill 2024, calling for accountability in government, an end to corruption, and the publication of all state debts.
