Transport was briefly halted along the Eldama Ravine-Torongo-Eldoret road as a group of frustrated youths blocked the route and set fires in protest of the road’s deteriorated condition. Speaking at Mosomboriet and Chebusie while security officers looked on without intervening, the youths claimed that the county Roads Executive had promised to repair the road. However, several months have passed without any progress.

“Our grievances have been ignored and Baringo county and national government leaders have turned a deaf ear to our plight. Sick patients and expectant mothers are ferried like sacks and boda boda operators are unable to access the road,” one protester said.

Attempts to contact Roads CEC Kibwalei Lekonaya and area MCA Ben Koech were unsuccessful, as their calls went unanswered. Two weeks prior, Lekonaya had assured locals who had also barricaded the road that repairs would be undertaken. Although a grader was dispatched to the site, residents claim it is experiencing mechanical issues and is not functioning properly.
