Real Madrid’s defender Dani Carvajal is facing a lengthy recovery after suffering a serious knee injury during a La Liga match against Villarreal. The club confirmed that Carvajal sustained multiple injuries, including ruptures to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), external collateral ligament, and popliteal tendon in his right leg. The injury occurred in the final minutes of Madrid’s 2-0 victory, which saw them pull level with Barcelona at the top of the La Liga standings.
Carvajal, who played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, will undergo surgery and is expected to be sidelined for several months. The defender expressed his disappointment on Instagram, stating his eagerness to start his recovery and return stronger. He received numerous messages of support from teammates and other public figures, including Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz.
This injury adds to Real Madrid’s recent woes, as they have already been dealing with long-term injuries to key players like Thibaut Courtois and Éder Militão. Additionally, winger Vinícius Júnior suffered a neck injury during the Villarreal match, but reports suggest he may recover in time for Madrid’s next matches after the international break.
Spain’s national team will also miss Carvajal in the coming months, along with Manchester City’s Rodri Hernandez, who is also dealing with a serious knee injury.
