Kenyan athlete Faith Kipyegon is gearing up for a triumphant comeback at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene this year. She will be part of a star-studded lineup that includes notable names like Grant Holloway, Hansle Parchment, Diribe Welteji, and Laura Muir.
Set to take place on May 25, Kipyegon will compete in the 5000m event, marking her return almost a year after her remarkable world record-breaking performance over the same distance at the Wanda Diamond League in Paris last season. In 2023, Kipyegon made waves globally by smashing three world records within a month during the Wanda Diamond League events, setting records in the 1500m in Florence, 5000m in Paris, and the mile in Monaco.
Eugene holds both sweet and bitter memories for Kipyegon, as she clinched the 1500m Diamond Trophy with a record-breaking time but also lost her 5000m world record to Ethiopian competitor Gudaf Tsegay. Undoubtedly, Kipyegon aims for another historic performance as she returns to Hayward Field later this month for the 5000m event.
In addition to Kipyegon, the event will feature a lineup of athletics’ biggest names, including world champions, Olympic champions, and reigning Diamond League champions. In the women’s 1500m, Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji and British star Laura Muir will face off, while the men’s 110m hurdles will see a showdown between USA’s world champion Grant Holloway, Jamaica’s Olympic champion Hansle Parchment, and American Daniel Roberts.
The Wanda Diamond League is renowned as the pinnacle of one-day athletics meetings, featuring 15 prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete across 14 series meetings to earn points and qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels in September.
