Detectives in Kiambu County have launched a manhunt for two suspects who allegedly attacked and robbed a couple before gang-raping one of the victims following a road accident in Kikuyu Sub-County early Thursday.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. at the KARLO Forest–Renguti Junction in the Kerwa area, where what began as a traffic accident escalated into a violent robbery and sexual assault.

According to investigators at Kikuyu Police Station, the couple was driving home when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and landed in a ditch on a nearby farm.

Police said two unidentified men approached the stranded couple, pretending to be Good Samaritans offering assistance. However, the suspects allegedly turned on the victims, brandishing knives before robbing them of their mobile phones.

The attackers are further reported to have forced the victims to reveal their M-Pesa PINs before withdrawing an undisclosed amount of money from their mobile wallets. They then fled the scene in an unknown direction.

During the attack, police said one of the victims was subjected to gang rape, while both victims sustained injuries.

The couple was later rescued by members of the public and rushed to P.C.E.A. Kikuyu Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

A team led by the Kikuyu Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO), accompanied by the Officer in Charge of Crime, traffic officers and Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) from Kiambu, visited and processed the scene later on Thursday.

Investigators recovered several empty alcohol bottles from inside the crashed vehicle, which were retained as exhibits as investigations continue.

Police said efforts to identify, trace and arrest the suspects are ongoing.
