A court in Kwale has ordered 33 gang members suspected of causing havoc for Diani residents to be detained for 14 days pending the determination of the case.

The 33 men appeared before Resident Magistrate Joy Mtimba to face charges of being members of a criminal gang, in violation of Section 3A(a) and Section 4(1) of the Prevention of Organized Crime Act, 2010.

“The suspects are said to have subjected residents of Diani to various forms of violence,” the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) said in a statement.

ODPP says the prosecution, through Chief Inspector Kennedy Mutunga, had sought 14 days to detain the suspects to allow the conclusion of investigations.

In her ruling, Magistrate Mtimba granted the request, ordering that the suspects be held at various police stations across Kwale, Diani, and Msambweni.

The case will be mentioned on 8th April 2025 for further directions.
