Detectives from the Forensic Crime Scene Investigations Department on Friday dusted and lifted fingerprints from the vehicle in which Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich was travelling when armed men intercepted and abducted him at the Gilgil Weighbridge on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
The forensic process began earlier in the morning at the DCI Regional Headquarters in Nakuru.
The Standard newspaper editor is at the same time in a meeting with DCI officers.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday said police were investigating the abduction, which has been blamed on a special police squad that allegedly operates outside the formal police structures of authority.
The Interior CS on Friday morning denied the existence of a special squad blamed for the abduction of Kiprotich.
The National Police Service (NPS) later denied being behind the abduction of the Associate Editor, saying it has launched investigations to establish the identity of the armed men.
NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga on Wednesday said Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had directed the Anti-Abduction Unit to immediately investigate the incident, including the identity of the heavily armed individuals seen ordering occupants out of Kiprotich’s vehicle.
“The NPS treats kidnapping and abduction with the utmost seriousness, as these grave offences threaten the lives, liberty and security of Kenyans,” Nyaga said.
