The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said it is analysing a viral video believed to show some of the prime suspects involved in the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during Monday’s protests.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, DCI said the incident endangered lives and caused significant property damage, adding that investigations remain active as detectives pursue leads to identify and apprehend those involved.

The agency urged members of the public who may recognise individuals captured in the footage, or have relevant information, to share it with the nearest police station or through the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline.

The update comes in the wake of a nationwide transport shutdown and protests over high fuel prices, which disrupted movement in several towns on Monday.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said four people died and more than 30 others were injured during the demonstrations, adding that 148 suspects were arrested over incidents of violence, looting and destruction of property.

Murkomen claimed that while most parts of the country were peaceful, criminal gangs were mobilised by “rogue politicians” to target government projects and property, including the torching of UDA offices in Wote and the burning of trucks at the Rironi–Mau Summit road project site.

The protests were triggered by fuel price increases announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in its May review, which raised the prices of super petrol and diesel by Ksh.16.65 and Ksh.46.29 per litre, respectively.

On Monday night, EPRA announced a mid-cycle recalculation of maximum pump prices after a petition by public transport operators, reviewing the price of diesel downwards by Ksh.10.06 per litre while kerosene was increased by Ksh.38.60, with super petrol unchanged.
