In a recent development, a Kibera court summoned an investigating officer to provide insights into a case involving former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Mohammed Echesa.
Echesa stands accused of allegedly extorting Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa for Sh240 million. Chief Magistrate Anne Mwangi also issued summons for the Langata DCIO to appear in court on June 24th to shed light on the case against Echesa, who also serves as the chairman of the Kenya Water Towers Agency.
The court issued these summons to enable the prosecution to consolidate the case against Echesa with that against businessman Joseph Waswa.
The charges against Echesa include conspiring to defraud by falsely accusing Governor Barasa of kidnapping him and demanding sums of money to drop the accusations. Additionally, Echesa is accused of extorting money from Governor Barasa under false pretenses related to alleged inappropriate photos and video clips.
These charges span incidents that allegedly occurred between December 15 and March 18 within Kakamega and Nairobi counties.
The prosecution alleges that Echesa obtained money from the governor by falsely claiming he could delete the alleged inappropriate content.
The court proceedings aim to shed light on these accusations and bring clarity to the case against Echesa and his alleged co-conspirators.
