One of Tanzania’s biggest music stars stepped away from the spotlight to offer a personal gesture of support, showing up at the doorstep of the country’s head of state during one of her most painful moments.
Diamond Platnumz, born Nasibu Abdul, visited President Samia Suluhu Hassan at her family home in Kizimkazi, southern Zanzibar, on September 9, 2026.
The visit came just two days after the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who passed away on the morning of September 7 at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
Tanzania’s State House communications account, @ikulu_mawasiliano, shared images of the visit on Instagram.
Who was Hafidh Ameir? Hafidh was 76 years old at the time of his death. A trained agriculturalist and academic, he married Samia Suluhu in 1978, long before she rose to national prominence.
Despite his wife becoming Tanzania’s first female president in 2021, Hafidh chose to live away from the public eye and rarely featured at official state functions, making him something of a quiet, steadying presence behind one of the continent’s most prominent leaders.
He was buried on the evening of his death, in keeping with Islamic burial traditions, at the family’s Kizimkazi residence.
His funeral drew several regional dignitaries, including Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi. He is survived by two widows, four children and 15 grandchildren.
One of his children, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, serves as a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
