An officer attached to the Public Trustee Department in the Office of the Attorney General’s chambers in Nakuru was on Tuesday arrested by EACC.

EACC arrested the officer for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Sh10,000 from a complainant in order to facilitate the release of bank cheques for the payment of his deceased father’s gratuity.

The complainant was following up on the gratuity payments for his father who passed away in 2014.

The cheques were drawn in favour of his mother and stepmother.

According to the complainant, his father was a former Police Officer who passed on in 2014 while on duty at Diff Police Post, Wajir County.

The complainant said he received a call from the suspect who informed him that his father’s death gratuity was ready and they could come for the cheques.

The suspect however said for the cheques to be released, the family was required to pay him Sh10,000.

The complainant said they informed the suspect that they could only afford Sh7,000 at the time, which he asked to be transacted through M-pesa.

The Mpesa number was of a different user and not the suspect. The money was sent on March 7, 2023.

On March 9, the complainant asked the suspect if his mother could pick up the cheque on March 10, but the suspect demanded the additional Sh3,000 first.

Sources in the EACC said the arrest was done while the suspect was receiving the balance and was in the process of releasing the cheques.

The suspect was taken into custody at EACC Nakuru offices where he was processed and released on cash bail pending the completion of the investigations.
