Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli has provided an update on the multi-million shilling forex trade scam in Eldoret, stating that police are actively investigating the incident and that those found responsible will be prosecuted.

Masengeli’s assurance comes as police in Eldoret took a statement from Caleb Mwania, a bishop of Dominion Church, regarding his knowledge of and relationship with the alleged mastermind of the scam, Ambrose Makech Abuti, which has left hundreds counting their losses.

Citizen TV interviewed Bishop Mwania after he recorded his statement; the clergyman expressed his surprise, stating that he did not expect Abuti to act in such a manner.

“He used to play music in the church. I have not involved myself in any indecent and immoral acts,” said Bishop Mwania.

As a result of the now failed investments, Mwania says the church has lost Ksh.4 million. The bishop also claims that his own family has also suffered losses at the hands of Abuti.

“I’ve also lost a lot of money as a pastor and I am servicing a lot of debts and loans. My own wife invested Ksh.1.4 million into the scheme. We are still looking for him,” said Mwania.

The bishop has since been interrogated by the police and has recorded a statement with them on the same.
Mwania’s engagement with the police came as Masengeli assured the public that the law enforcement had seized control of the matter.

“The investigation is very active and once it is completed, the law will take its course and those who are culpable will be brought to book,” said Masengeli.

The police’s assurance comes amid slow progress in arresting the suspect, who remains at large nearly a week after his actions were exposed. Abuti’s phone numbers seem to be switched off, and his victims are accusing the police in Eldoret of hindering his arrest and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the county government of Uasin Gishu has advised residents to exercise due diligence before investing in such schemes.

“This issue has really affected us; just look at all these people here. We are hospitable and we welcome all businessmen to Uasin Gishu but there are con artists and swindlers taking advantage of our hospitality,” Governor John Bii said.
