A suspected gangster who had been in and out of jail met his tragic end on Saturday when he was lynched alongside an accomplice on suspicion of stealing a phone in Nairobi’s Pangani estate.
The duo was cornered by an angry mob moments after they snatched the phone from a pedestrian and were attempting to flee using a motorbike.
An officer privy to the investigations into the incident, said one of the suspects was jailbird who had in the past been warned by the police to reform.
According to the officer, the suspect in question, only identified as Ibrahim, had been jailed in the past for engaging in criminal activities within Mathare slums.
“He was a habitual offender and he had been jailed and even warned by police officers. Unfortunately, he never took the warnings serious,” our source said.
The officer also said the slain suspect hid under the umbrella of a community organisation in Mathare while he continued committing crime.
According to the police, the two suspects had been burnt beyond recognition by the time police officers who were alerted of the incident arrived at the scene. The two bodies were later then taken to the City Mortuary.
