Comedian and philanthropist Eric Omondi has broken his silence on the Karen Nyamu heckling saga, questioning why the nominated senator showed up at a health awareness event in the first place.
In a selfie-style video filmed inside his car and shared on Instagram, Omondi laid out in blunt terms why politicians were not welcome at Natalie Githinji’s Endometriosis Warriors event, which was held at the KICC Comesa Grounds on Sunday, 27 September.
Why Eric Omondi banned politicians from the event
The comedian said the brief for the event was straightforward: no politicians. He gave two reasons. First, he said not a single politician, including women representatives in Nairobi, came through with financial support when the event was being planned, despite repeated calls, proposals, and promises.
“Hi Eric, I’ll support,” he mimicked, before adding that none of them followed through for Natalie.
The second reason, he explained, was about protecting the message. The entire conversation was meant to centre on endometriosis and the women living with the condition. Omondi was direct:
“We are not going to allow the conversation to be overtaken, to be hijacked.”
He went on to describe how Nyamu reached out through his manager, Dedan, asking to attend and offering support.
He acknowledged she sent KSh 100,000 but said he still communicated to his team at the gate that no politicians were to be allowed in.
“The conversation is endometriosis,” he insisted.
Why did Nyamu attend?
The sharpest moment in the video came when Omondi turned his focus directly to Nyamu’s decision to attend despite the clear boundary that had been set.
“Sitazki kusema Karen Nyamu wakifanya kuja event, any event, but allikuja kufanya nini?” he asked, suggesting that a politician’s presence at such a moment inevitably shifts the spotlight away from the cause.
He drew on his experience as a public figure to make the point, saying there are events he personally avoids because he knows his presence would redirect cameras away from the person who truly deserves the attention.
Nyamu had previously accused Eric of engineering the hostile reception she received when she took the stage.
The senator claimed he and the MC, Antonio, instructed people at the back of the crowd to chant “wantam” the moment she began speaking, pointing to what she described as a deliberate cue when Eric introduced her by saying the two of them did not see eye to eye politically.
Nyamu also tied the incident to a previous episode involving the late content creator Shalkido, alleging a pattern of Eric undermining gestures she made in public.
