Croatia captain, Luka Modric has insisted that football is very cruel amid the ongoing Euro 2024.

Modric spoke to reporters following his side’s 1-1 draw against Italy on Monday.

The Real Madrid midfielder gave Croatia the lead after seeing his penalty saved during the encounter.

But Mattia Zaccagni scored in the final minute of stoppage time as Italy broke Croatia’s hearts with a late equaliser.

The result saw the defending champions, Italy progress to the last 16 of Euro 2024.

“Football can be very cruel. I want to play football forever, but we know that this is impossible,” Modric said.

“One day I will have to announce my retirement from playing, but I do not know when that will be.”
