Family seeks justice for police officer killed in Kabete

A family is seeking justice for a police officer whose body was found dumped in a thicket in Kagira, Kabete, with relatives awaiting a post-mortem examination and the arraignment of the chief suspect.

Florence Wangui, the sister of the deceased, said the family is looking to the two milestones for answers over the death of 46-year-old Sergeant Gladys Nyaguthe Kirika.

The suspect, Patrick Chege, is currently receiving treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kinoo under heavy police guard after an alleged attempt to take his own life.

The case came to light on September 3, 2026, when Chege walked into Kinoo Police Station and reportedly told the deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS) that he had killed his wife and dumped her body in bushes in Kagira.

Officers from Kabete Police Station subsequently launched a search of the area and discovered the body of an adult woman concealed in dense undergrowth.

A search of the body recovered a Certificate of Appointment identifying the deceased as Sergeant Kirika, a police officer attached to Subuiga Police Station in Buuri West Sub-County, Meru County.

Preliminary examination of the scene indicated signs of a violent confrontation. The officer had severe head injuries believed to have been inflicted with a blunt object, as well as injuries to her left hand.

Investigators also noted deep marks on her legs, raising suspicion that she may have been restrained with a rope before or during the assault.

A hammer and a Maasai sword were recovered at the scene and taken as exhibits as detectives continued with investigations.

Following the processing of the scene, Sergeant Kirika’s body was moved to PCEA Kikuyu Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the cause and circumstances of her death.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through the Dagoretti Division, has since taken over the case.

Chege is expected to be charged with murder once doctors determine that he is medically fit to appear in court.
