According to Transmara South Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Odeke, rescue operations are ongoing but are progressing slowly due to a lack of specialized equipment required to access the underground tunnels safely.
Speaking to Citizen TV by phone, Odeke said an unknown number of miners are still believed to be trapped beneath the collapsed mine.
He added that a specialized mining rescue team has been dispatched to Lolgorian to help accelerate the operation, noting that cameras and other sophisticated underground search equipment are needed for the mission to succeed.
Police have since cordoned off the area as rescue efforts continue.
The bodies of the five victims have been moved to the Lolgorian Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
