Ethiopian Airlines has announced the suspension of its flights to and from Asmara, Eritrea, starting on September 3, 2024. In a statement released on Monday, the airline attributed the suspension to challenging operating conditions in Eritrea that are beyond its control.
“Ethiopian regrets to inform its valued customers traveling to/from Asmara that it has suspended its flights to Asmara effective September 3, 2024, due to very difficult operating conditions it has encountered in Eritrea that are beyond its control,” the statement read.
The airline assured affected passengers that they would be rebooked on alternative airlines at no extra cost, and those seeking refunds would receive their full ticket value.
“Ethiopian Airlines shall do all possible to rebook affected passengers on other airlines at no additional cost. Alternatively, passengers can receive a full refund for their tickets. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time,” the airline stated.
This decision follows a recent notice from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority, which announced the suspension of all Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea starting September 30, 2024. While the specific reasons for this suspension have not been disclosed, Ethiopian Airlines has been operating five weekly flights to Asmara. The airline is currently seeking clarification from Eritrean authorities regarding the decision.
