Veteran broadcaster Fred Machoka has opened up about the behind-the-scenes anxiety that nearly overshadowed what he is now calling the greatest Rhumba concert of the decade, while two headline-grabbing controversies involving Koffi Olomide and Gloria Orwoba kept tongues wagging long after the show wrapped up.
The Golden Jubilee celebration, which brought together some of the biggest names in Rhumba music, drew massive crowds and delivered a night that Machoka insists will be remembered for years. But the road to that moment was anything but smooth.
Machoka reveals pre-show fears
Taking to social media after the event, Machoka expressed heartfelt gratitude while lifting the lid on just how much pressure the organising team had been under.
“At first, we were worried about whether Ebola would deter the event from happening… how were we going to deal with the crowd? If for whatever reason the rains came down… but God Almighty took care of everything,” he wrote.
Despite those fears, the night delivered, Koffi Olomide, one of Rhumba’s biggest global draws, put on a relentless two-hour set that left fans on their feet. Machoka also praised performances from Koffi’s wife Cindy, Katilia, Mama Mbilia Bell, Makasi Man, Alicios Theluji, Them Mushrooms, and Les Wanyika, describing the collective effort as proof that Rhumba could succeed where other concert formats have fallen short.
“Thank you to the fans of Koffi Olomide who had one of the finest shows, two hours of action nonstop, and his wife Cindy,” he shared.
Special recognition went to the event’s MCs, including Jeff Koinange, Mwalimu Churchill, and Patrick Igunza.
“I just want to let you know that I appreciate you big time, and may God continue to bless you abundantly. If possible, we shall do it again, and if not possible, it is okay,” Machoka said.
Dramas at Fred Machoka’s 50th anniversary
Even as the music drew praise, the evening was not without its controversies. The Roga Roga show host found himself at the centre of two separate incidents that generated significant buzz online and among attendees.
The first involved politician Gloria Orwoba, who was reportedly ordered off the stage amid “Wantam” chants from the crowd, turning what should have been a celebratory moment into an uncomfortable flashpoint.
The second drama unfolded between Machoka and Koffi Olomide himself, with a disagreement between the two men surfacing during the celebrations and quickly trending on social media.

Details of both incidents have been widely shared, with many observers noting the irony of drama erupting at an event designed to celebrate decades of musical harmony. Despite the controversies, Machoka’s post-event tone remained upbeat and grateful, choosing to focus on the positives of a night he clearly holds dear.
Whether another edition of the concert materialises remains to be seen, but Machoka’s closing words suggest the dream is very much alive.
