The Jubilee flagbearer was endorsed by the party as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, signalling a renewed effort to reclaim political relevance ahead of the next elections.
Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni confirmed in October last year that Matiang’i’s application to run for president under the party’s banner had been unanimously approved and that he had been appointed Deputy Party Leader.
“We have received and formally accepted Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s application for his presidential bid, and the NEC has agreed that he carries our flag,” said Kioni.
Matiang’i has been at the forefront of censuring President William Ruto’s administration, vowing to make significant reforms in the nation if he clinches the presidency in the next election cycle.
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary repeatedly dispelled reports that there are divisions in the United Opposition political camp, assuring that the political dons in the faction are working unanimously.
“They are shaking, they have tried to divide us… they were thinking that we would never work together. I have bad news for you. We are going to work together,” he said.
Members of the United Opposition have been deflecting pressure on who will be its flagbearer since Matiang’i and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka have expressed interest in Kenya’s top leadership seat.
This also comes as the enhanced continuous voter registration enters its last week, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) saying it has registered 1,370,930 new voters, mostly Kenyan youth.
