Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga delivered a heartfelt tribute at the commissioning of Raila Odinga’s mausoleum in Bondo, Kang’o ka Jaramogi, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, sharing the personal story of how Ida Odinga helped shape her political journey.
Speaking at the solemn ceremony, Wanga opened by directly addressing Ida Odinga, crediting her with spotting her on a radio programme and subsequently recommending her to Raila.
“You are the one who spotted me on a radio show, and you are the one who told Baba that I have spotted a young woman leader who I think can go far,” Wanga said, adding that she was equally grateful to Ida for standing by Raila through the years with grace and dignity.
Wanga honours Raila’s push for women in leadership
A large part of her tribute focused on Raila’s deep conviction in inclusion, particularly his backing of women in leadership at moments when it came at a political cost.
She recalled efforts to pass the two-thirds gender rule in parliament, noting that many legislators went missing when the vote came, but Raila walked into the chambers and remained firm.
“Baba came to the chambers and sat there and said, “hata kama ni mbaya ikuwe mbaya”, she said, describing just how unshakeable his commitment was.
Wanga also pointed to devolution as another pillar of the inclusion agenda Raila championed, arguing that his vision ensured no corner of the country was left out of national progress.
She linked that legacy to the current government’s Usawa initiative, praising President Ruto for continuing the spirit of equitable distribution across counties.
