IIn statement on Thursday, the government said an inspection team led by Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, alongside Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru and officials from various ministries and agencies, was satisfied with the progress of works ahead of the June 1 event.
The delegation was received by Wajir Governor Ahmed Jiir, his deputy Ahmed Abdi and other county leaders, with the national government saying the county has worked closely with local leadership to deliver what will be the first time Madaraka Day celebrations are held in Northern Kenya.
According to the statement, the main stadium was between 65 and 70 per cent complete, with works projected to be finalised at least two weeks ahead of schedule.
The government said road works within Wajir town and key access routes were ongoing, while improvements were also being carried out at the County Commissioner’s residence, which will host the official State luncheon.
It added that interventions to improve water supply, including borehole drilling and reticulation, were underway through a joint arrangement between the State Department for Water and the county government.
The statement said the installation of generators has stabilised electricity supply, with the government noting that all components were being coordinated to ensure the celebrations run smoothly.
“We are encouraged by the progress made so far and the strong collaboration between the National Government and the County Government. From the stadium to roads, water, and power, all key infrastructure is on course, and we are confident that Wajir will be ready ahead of time to host a successful Madaraka Day celebration,” Omollo said.
He said the event will be historic for Wajir and the wider region, adding that the move reflects the government’s commitment to national unity and inclusivity.
“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a Government, we are proud to take national celebrations to all parts of the country,” he said.
The PS said a series of exhibitions and public engagement activities will be held in the weeks leading to June 1, aligned to this year’s theme: Education, skills and the future.
