Two young siblings, one in Class Two and the other in nursery school, were killed after a speeding vehicle allegedly struck them as they made their way home from school in a residential estate.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described a harrowing sequence of events in which the children, who were walking beside the road, were hit by a vehicle that witnesses claim was overtaking on the wrong side.
The driver reportedly fled on foot after the crash, leaving the children on the ground at the estate in Arusha, Tanzania.
One woman who witnessed the incident described the moment with visible anguish, saying the children had tried to move out of the vehicle’s path but were unable to escape.
“I am hurt. A woman said the driver was on the wrong. If you look at it, the kids were escaping, but the vehicle followed them,” she said.
She confirmed that both children died before they could be transported to hospital, calling on motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads.
“The two were siblings, and it is very painful. We request drivers to be keen while on the road,” she added.
A second witness, who was in tears as she spoke, also placed the blame squarely on the driver, alleging he had been speeding moments before the crash. She said the children were beside the road when the vehicle veered into them.
“It is very painful as a woman; the kids were hit and killed. The driver was at fault because the kids were beside the road. He followed them and hit them. He then ran away,” she said.
She further claimed the accident was entirely preventable and that the children were trapped underneath the vehicle after impact. Residents had to physically lift the vehicle to recover their bodies. “One of the kids died on the spot, while the other one also died as we were waiting for an ambulance,” she said.
Enraged by what they had witnessed, residents allegedly set the vehicle alight after the driver abandoned it and fled. Footage from the scene showed the vehicle fully engulfed in flames while a crowd had gathered nearby.
Another resident alleged the driver had been testing the vehicle at the time and lost control before ramming into the two children.
