A 15-year-old Grade 6 pupil from Rangwe in Homa Bay County is sitting her Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations from a hospital bed, just days after undergoing a caesarean section to deliver her baby.

The teenager was brought into the labour ward at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital on a Friday evening. She delivered a baby boy during the night, hours before the national examinations commenced on Monday morning.

KPSEA Candidate Sits Exams in Hospital

Despite the circumstances, the candidate did not miss a single paper. She is taking her KPSEA exams inside the health facility, with officers from the Ministry of Education and hospital staff present throughout the sessions.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr. Vincent Oduor confirmed that the girl’s caesarean section was successful and that her condition, as well as that of the newborn, remains stable.

The baby is currently receiving care in the hospital’s newborn unit while his mother works through her examination papers.

The girl is among 40,821 candidates registered to sit the KPSEA in Homa Bay County this year.

The case has drawn attention to the quiet determination of a young learner who, in extraordinarily difficult circumstances, chose not to step away from her education.

Rather than deferring her exams, she is completing them from her recovery bed, with institutional support making it possible.

Dr. Oduor did not disclose further personal details about the pupil or her family, but confirmed that arrangements at the facility are in place to ensure she completes her assessments without disruption to her recovery.
