Hosts Kenya Harlequin experienced an unexpected setback in the opening round, losing 15-12 to Daystar Falcons in the opening match of the Christie 7s played at RFUEA Grounds on Saturday.
The upset didn’t end with Harlequin, as another shocker unfolded when Blak Blad, a determined varsity side, managed to outpace the experienced Homeboyz team, securing a thrilling 24-19 victory.
Strathmore Leos, Kabras wins
Meanwhile, defending champions Strathmore Leos made a strong statement in their opening match, dominating Kisumu RFC with an impressive 31-0 win. This commanding victory propelled them to the top of Pool C.
KCB Rugby displayed their dominance on the field, securing a commanding 26-7 victory over Catholic Monks as they skillfully orchestrated four tries, leaving their opponents trailing behind.
In the fiercely contested Christie 7s Pool A, the National 7s Circuit leaders, Kabras RFC, made a powerful start with a 24-12 triumph over their neighbouring rivals, MMUST, in what was dubbed the Lurambi Derby.
Felix Ayange’s charges ignited the scoreboard with four tries, overpowering the spirited students who managed two tries in the course of their defeat.
Nakuru RFC asserted their presence in the tournament by triumphing over Impala Saracens, who were making their inaugural appearance in the top-tier competition this season. Nakuru’s Wanyore secured a convincing 21-5 victory, propelled by three converted tries that outshone Impala’s effort.
Following these engaging clashes, both Nakuru and Kabras stand tall with three points each, firmly establishing themselves as early contenders. On the other hand, MMUST and Impala find themselves with a point each, determined to bounce back in the forthcoming battles.
Meanwhile, in Pool D, the holders of the National 7s Circuit title, Menengai Oilers, found themselves in a closely fought encounter as they were held to a 7-7 draw by Nondies. This cagey match saw only two tries, highlighting the intense competition at the heart of the tournament.
In a separate thrilling showdown, Mwamba showcased their prowess, claiming a commanding 27-14 victory over the newly promoted Sigalagala RFC. This triumph propelled Kevin Wambua’s side to the top of Pool D standings with three points, while Menengai Oilers and Nondies share the spoils with two points each.
